Right now, only about 35% of Canadian workers are covered by workplace pension plans, and the benefits can differ enormously; some mid-level earners might end up with pensions valued as high as $1.5 million, while many others are left with far less. A new proposal aims to change this by introducing a universal, national defined contribution plan that would cover nearly all workers. The concept is simple: employees would contribute around 4% of their earnings, employers would match that amount, and the funds would stay protected, with the option to choose investments or stick with a default strategy. The hope is that, by pooling these resources, Canadians can achieve more predictable and transparent retirement outcomes from a combined 8% contribution rate. Of course, shifting from the current patchwork system would require a long transition and plenty of discussion with everyone involved.
